             Dr. Eula Cohen Scholarship

Eula M. Cohen was born March 26, 1929, in Chattanooga, Tennessee and grew up and attended elementary and high school at the historic Howard High in Chattanooga where she graduated as the class Salutatorian. Although an only child, she was surrounded by many cousins, aunts, and uncles on her father side of Cartersville, Georgia and her mother's side of Chattanooga.

During her formative years, she was very active in dance and tap. Following high school, she made her way to Atlanta to attend Clark College in 1947. While a student at Dear Ole Clark “CC” Eula became very active, both academically and organizationally. She was a member of many clubs, honor societies and groups including the Marching Band where she served as the head majorette and later serving as the Clark College majorette sponsor/advisor as an adult. She would go on to graduate from Clark as her class’s Valedictorian in 1951. Also during her time in college, Eula would join the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in the Fall of 1948 through her beloved Alpha Pi Chapter. It was on the campus of Clark College where Eula and Rudolph “Rudy” Cohen, Sr. would meet and later marry in December of 1954 in Atlanta, Georgia.

After graduating from Clark College, she would go on to attend The Atlanta University where she graduated with honors receiving her Master of Arts Degree in 1952. Professionally, she would spend her entire career in the field of education as a teacher, counselor, sponsor, and mentor. Eula spent much of her career in the Atlanta Public School System, most notably at Luther Judson Price High School as a teacher and counselor. After working for many years in education and raising her family, she continued to balance the two while returning to Atlanta University to work on and complete a Ph.D. in 1983. She also received continuing education work at the University of Florida and the Georgia Medical College’s Allied Health program.

In addition to her work in education, Eula was very active within her community and church. She served on many Boards and Committees including the Clark College Board of Trustees, the local Urban League and the Race Relations Committee at Georgia State University. She has been recognized locally and nationally for her dedication to her Alma Mater. In addition to her service on the Board of Trustees, she also served as Vice President of the National Alumni Association and President of the Atlanta Chapter. Eula was also an involved member of many of the organizations she loved including the Smart Set Club, the Top Ladies of Distinction, Alpha Kappa Alpha and the Atlanta Chapter of the 555th Parachute Infantry Association. In 1951, she was featured in the Sorority’s Summer Ivy Leaf Magazine honoring outstanding college Sorors.
